Reflexology is a hands-on therapy for restoring balance to the body. It is most often applied to the feet, although it is also effective when applied to the hands or ears. In reflexology therapy, we look at the feet, hands and ears as a reflection of the whole body. When we are working on the feet, for example, we are not just acting on the exact area our thumbs are touching - we are also addressing the part of the body represented by that place on the foot (see foot chart diagram, above). When I am applying pressure to the bottom side of your big toe I am also addressing your brain. Reflexology uses a gentle, alternating pressure, applied with the practitioner's thumbs and fingers (some forms also use tools), on all sides of the feet/hands/ears to stimulate circulation throughout the body. This alternating pressure sends signals to the brain to attend to that part of the body represented by the part of the foot/hand/ear the pressure is on. The body's innate intelligence can then address whatever needs to be done in that zone to restore balance. During a reflexology session the whole foot (hand or ear) is worked on and, in this way, the whole body is worked on. The treatment interrupts stress patterns to help reset the body's level of tension. When reflexology is received regularly it can change the way the body responds to stress.
Reflexology is an ancient therapy, with various methods of it being practiced in healing traditions all over the world for thousands of years - including the indigenous cultures in North America. Modern reflexology in the West has developed from a methodology based on zones of the body and corresponding these with zones on the feet or hands (a little bit like the meridian pathways in acupuncture). This was originally called Zone Therapy and eventually it was developed further and given the name Reflexology as the parts of the body represented on the foot are called reflex areas. There are many different forms of reflexology that developed in many parts of the world at different times in history, however, they are all similar in the mapping of the body on the feet and hands.
Reflexology is safe and helpful for all ages .
Benefits:
Reflexology stimulates overall circulation throughout the body. It interrupts stress patterns, helping to reset the body's level of tension and strengthening the ability of the body to heal and respond to stress. Reflexology restores balance and well-being on the physical, mental and emotional levels. and brings about a feeling of relaxation and calm. Regular reflexology treatments can change the way the body responds to stress and fine tunes the self healing processes in the whole body.
After a session, people usually feel relaxed and either sleepy or energized. They often find they are going to the bathroom more due to the cleansing process initiated through reflexology. There is more flexibility in their feet or hands which enables easier movement. As we are each unique, so are our experiences. You will have your own experience of reflexology.
If you are in good, overall health, lead a healthy lifestyle and practice regular self care, one session every three to four weeks may be enough to maintain a strong, healthy system. If you are facing challenges in your life and/or health and are not able to practice self care as needed, more regular sessions will be very helpful especially the first few months as each one will build on the previous one, reminding the body of what balance is and moving it in that direction regularly.
What to Expect During a Reflexology Session:
A reflexology session is carried out with the client either sitting in a reflexology chair or lying on a massage table (this is really the preference of the practitioner and the methods they use) The person is fully clothed except for their feet , if the session is being conducted on the feet. The reflexologist will work on the client's feet, adjusting the amount of pressure they apply to the person's tolerance. Pain is not meant to be a part of the process.
Prior to a session, the client will be asked to fill out an intake form. It is important for a reflexologist to know about a person's current state of health so that they can adjust the session and how they work, accordingly. For instance, for a pregnant person there are parts of the feet that are best not stimulated at this time.
My Training:
I studied at the Baltimore School of Reflexology in Maryland USA and became a Certified Reflexologist in 2012, specialising in feet, hands and ears. I have completed further studies in Reflexology for Emotion Stress (REST), Acupoint Reflexology and Chakra Reflexology. I have been practicing since 2012 in spas and clinics in the eastern USA, Kelowna and Penticton.
